Chapter 84: Zone 4 Disciplinary Enforcers (3)
I hated people who abused their authority.
People who pushed others down by exploiting their lofty and fortified positions for selfish reasons... I’ve always hated them throughout my life.
But now…
I was someone who liked solving problems. I had the soul of a scholar and a researcher from a young age.
Maybe that was why I liked games—they’re all about continuously solving problems within a defined set of rules.
And when it came to solving problems, I didn’t care what tools I had to use to reach the goal—pen and paper, computers, or even power. If abusing my authority was the only way to fix something, then I was willing to wield all the power at my disposal.
“Ugh…”
The first problem was ensuring Gray’s survival. But as I worked on it, the issue shifted. It became about eliminating the threat hidden inside Hiaka. It was like a small thorn in my foot—trivial and tiny, but impossible to ignore.
So, in the process of solving that problem, I ended up here.
“Ugh… ngh…”
In my opinion, people who grow old and become stagnant are doomed to decay.
Usually, people change through death. But that didn’t apply to those who grow old and stay stagnant. Death made no difference to them; it only provided an excuse for their decay, which then spread, infected, and rotted their surroundings.
“Ugh… ugh…”
Therefore, this person had to die here.
“Fine, I’ll help you. If you can’t do it, I’ll open the fissure for you. Using your hands to pry it open, of course.”
I knelt down and grabbed the supervising officer’s wrist. I then dragged him closer toward the fissure.
“Ugh! S-Stop…! I-I was… I was wrong…!!”
“Why are you resisting? Just let me do it for you.”
“S-Stop it…!! D-Don’t…!!”
My stats have been higher these days thanks to my repeated training and recent boss fights. I could overpower him and drag him around, no matter how much he resisted.
“Responsibility isn’t something you can just claim with words. Anyone can say they take responsibility. So a real leader must prove it. Show it with their own actions. Don’t you agree? Hm?”
The muscles in my forearm tightened, veins bulging as I squeezed his wrist.
He was helpless against me. Slowly, his arm crept closer to the fissure.
“Aaaagh…! Please… please don’t…!!”
He cried and begged as if a viper’s jaw was closing in on him. The enforcers nearby were horrified, but none tried to stop me.
Then, just as I pressed his hand to the fissure...
“Please leave it at that.”
A dozen figures appeared around me, clad in shining metal armor and wreathed in light.
The main office’s emergency response unit.
“Ah… Aaah…! Here! Over here!”
The supervising officer—who had only been pretending to apologize—cried out in joy, as if angels had descended to save him.
They were the elite members of the Disciplinary Enforcers, known as the Nameless.
Interestingly, they weren’t even human.
They were ancient battle dolls, crafted through alchemy and stigmata†.
“Hey! This bastard tried to kill me! It’s him! He’s the criminal…! Arrest him immediately…!!”
The officer’s face lit up with glee.
He fully expected me to get restrained, dragged away, and face punishment. After all, what could a simple professor do against the emergency unit from the main office?
But he was dreaming with his eyes wide open, because I also had contacted the main office before he arrived.
I’d left a message for Ezekiel, and as a department dean, he had more than enough authority to demand an audit.
As a result…
“What are you all doing, Nameless?! Hurry up and arrest this madman…!”
As the supervising officer shouted joyfully, the Nameless turned their heads and... bowed to me.
“…Wh-what are they—”
The officer’s voice trembled with confusion and disbelief.
Avoiding his eyes, the Nameless addressed me directly and respectfully.
“You mustn’t kill the enforcer, Professor.”
I gave a slow nod. It was getting late.
“There are many fissures in the area. We should deal with those first.”
“Yes, sir.”
The regular enforcers, still clueless about what was happening, watched in stunned silence as I let go of the supervisor’s wrist and stood up.
⋮
After that incident, everything else was settled fairly quickly.
Needless to say, the fissures were real. They were all at the brink of breaking open, but we fortunately managed to address them in time.
The Zone 4 Disciplinary Division underwent a full investigation afterward.
I later heard the supervising officer was made to take responsibility and was removed from his post.
Frankly, I thought he got off easy. He should’ve been dismissed entirely and blacklisted from the Disciplinary Enforcers altogether.
It seemed he had quite a bit of influence and connections.
Still, I treated it as a minor incident and moved on with my life.
* * *
Dennis, the ex-supervising officer, burned with rage and humiliation for days after his dismissal.
It was all because of that bastard—Senior Professor Dante Hiakapo.
After the incident, Dennis tried to dig up information on him through the Systematic Association⧉.
But the request was expensive, and he couldn’t ask for too much. So he decided to examine the professor’s past. A person’s history often shows who they truly are.
To his surprise, however, there wasn’t much to learn. According to the 「Systematic Star⧉」’s official records, there was nothing remarkable about him. Neither an impressive past nor an important identity.
Dennis had assumed Dante must have had a powerful backer—but there was no indication of that at all.
To think his entire career had been destroyed by some insignificant professor…
Yet amidst the despair, a spark of hope began to flicker in his heart.
Perhaps he could finally get his revenge on Dante Hiakapo. He might destroy the person who had turned his comfortable, happy life upside down. He would also ruin that wretched professor’s life in return.
And now was the time to make use of his connections.
The bastard was just a senior professor. He was likely a Master-rated combatant at best, with a four-digit World Rank.
And Dennis had connections with far stronger people.
He made his first call to someone from the White Path.
“Hello?”
“Ah, it’s been a while, Supervising Officer Dennis.”
It seemed news of his dismissal hadn’t reached Zone 0 yet.
So he decided to keep that information to himself. No reason to make things more difficult than necessary.
“Would it be possible for me to request an assassination?”
“A request? Hmm… That’s a bit troublesome. As someone of the White Path, I normally avoid killing people…”
“It is someone who humiliated me more than anyone ever has. I want to get my revenge no matter what, but I have no way of doing so without any help…”
“…”
The kind-sounding senior professor on the other end sighed before speaking again.
“All right. Tell me everything that happened.”
Dennis leaped at the opportunity and embellished the story, piling on lies to vilify his mortal enemy.
“Is that true? That’s pure evil.”
“Yes, exactly. So please… won’t you help me?”
“All right. It goes against my principles to kill people so easily, but I’ll find some way to get back at him for you… What’s his name?”
“It’s Dante Hiakapo!”
Suddenly, the line fell silent.
“…Professor Leo? Are you there?”
Indeed, the person Dennis had called was Senior Professor Leo Bardo—the very man who had fought Jinxsite by Dante’s side.
“Do you hear me, Professor Leo?”
Why isn’t he saying anything?
Dennis was questioning himself when a response finally came through the line. But unlike what he was expecting, it was an icy-cold, sharp voice.
“I’ll pretend I never heard any of this.”
Dennis felt his stomach drop.
“H-How come…?”
“I’m disappointed, Supervising Officer Dennis. You should handle your own business yourself.”
Tuut—
The line was cut.
Dennis blinked in disbelief.
What’s going on?
Why would the righteous and gentle Professor Leo ignore his request…?
Dennis tried calling again, but Leo didn’t answer. All he could do was sit there and grit his teeth in frustration.
As he replayed the conversation in his head, a conclusion began to form.
Dante Hiakapo probably belonged to the Black Path. That was likely the reason Leo refused to grant his request, fearing it would spark another conflict between the two factions.
“Tsk!”
The Hiakan members of the White Path were so weak-willed and ineffective. How could they ignore and dismiss such a dangerous member of the Black Path?
But now, he knew what to do.
He just needed to ask for help from someone within the Black Path instead.
Dennis thought of a certain cadet. He had previously volunteered for the Disciplinary Enforcers to maintain public security. The boy was a genius assassin, but also had a righteous and brave heart, unlike the others from the Black Path.
“Hello, Supervising Officer.”
Thankfully, the boy answered the call.
“It’s been a while. How have you been?”
They exchanged brief greetings, then got to the point.
“Sorry to bother you, but I have a favor to ask. It’s a request.”
“A request?”
“Yes. An assassination mission. There’s someone I want you to kill.”
“Why are you asking me for this, Officer?”
Dennis launched into another roundabout and highly edited version of the story, avoiding the full truth. The kind-hearted cadet listened patiently.
“That’s one evil bastard… Understood. I'll kill him for you.”
“Thank you so much…!”
“So, who’s this bastard?”
“He’s a senior professor. His name is—”
The cadet talking to Dennis was Balmung Nibelung, the son of the Pitch-Dark Constellation⚉, heir to House Nibelung, and a brilliant assassin of the Black Dragon Division.
“Dante Hiakapo. Even his name sounds evil and trashy, right?”
Dennis chuckled smugly.
With this, that bastard was finished.
This boy was a Black Dragon cadet and was known for not listening to his professors.
But then…
“…What the fuck did you just say, asshole?”
A string of profanity suddenly exploded through the line.
“W-What did you…?”
“Did I hear that right? Did you just say Dante Hiakapo?”
“You’re saying he wrongfully destroyed your office? Fuck you, asshole. You think I’m some goddamn moron or something? Who do you think you’re trying to fool?!”
“W-What are you talking about, Cadet…?”
“Quit your pitiful act, you piece of shit. If the professor destroyed your office, you must have deserved it. How dare a lowly mutt like you badmouth him?!”
Dennis was at a complete loss. The boy’s reaction made no sense at all.
But Balmung’s fury kept pouring through the line.
“Hey!! How many people did you call to spread your bullshit, huh?! How many did you trick with your dirty little scam?!”
Dennis sat there silently, stunned, as the onslaught continued.
“Not answering now, are you, you son of a bitch? Where are you?! Still at the Zone 4 disciplinary office? Sit tight—I’m on my way. Make sure to wash your neck so I can get a clean slice. Got it?! Let’s see if you’ve got the guts to repeat that nonsense to my face!”
The line went dead.
Dennis’s hands trembled uncontrollably.
Luckily, he wasn't in Zone 4 and definitely wasn’t at any disciplinary office.
But his heart wouldn’t stop pounding.
Why the hell is that crazy punk reacting like this…?!
He visualized the Balmung from his memories.
The boy appeared tough, but proved to be kind. He was sincere and responsible while volunteering for the Disciplinary Enforcers, unlike any other members of the Black Path Dennis had seen before.
However, now Balmung represented the Black Path mindset much more than anyone else Dennis had encountered.
Everyone’s gone insane… White Path, Black Path… the whole world’s out to get me.
Who the hell was this Dante Hiakapo?
Still, Dennis wasn’t ready to give up.
But he couldn’t contact the chief professors in his contacts. They were too far up the hierarchy for him to make a personal request.
They’d probably ignore his calls to begin with.
So, his only option now was someone who was neither from the White nor the Black Paths.
[ Neutral Senior Professor Collider ]
Dennis stared at the name in his contacts.
This person described himself as a remarkable, elite senior professor, and reality seemed to agree with those statements.
If Dennis couldn’t rely on the two opposing factions, then perhaps the neutral faction was the answer.
And since Collider appeared older than Dante, he was likely stronger than the latter.
But after the last two calls, doubt started to gnaw at Dennis from the inside. A thought sprouted—one he couldn’t shake:
What if Collider has even less influence than Dante?
He felt that even if he called the neutral professor, things wouldn’t work out for him.
So Dennis gave up on his revenge. He was left totally discouraged.
[ Missed Call: Balmung Nibelung (4) ]
Unfortunately, the nightmare didn’t end there. Sadly, he had to live in fear for days afterward.
[ Missed Call: Balmung Nibelung (38) ]
His crystal ball wouldn’t stop ringing.
And even after he blocked the crazy boy in his contacts, more calls kept coming from unknown numbers.
[ Missed Call: ??? (1) ]
[ Missed Call: ??? (35) ]
[ Missed Call: ??? (127) ]
One night, he even dreamed of a rabid dog lunging for his throat.
“Aaaaah!!”
He woke with a scream, clutching his blanket in a cold sweat.
S-Stop calling me…!!
Hair-loss! Insomnia! Inability to focus! His daily life was in shambles and falling apart.
He even received some bone-chilling messages.
——
– ???: I will look for you.
– ???: I will find you.
– ???: And I will kill you.
Eeeeeek…!!
After enduring three full days of absolute terror, Dennis finally chose to leave the academy.
