Chapter 82: Zone 4 Disciplinary Enforcers (1)
——
Imperial Public Security Investigation Report: Gray Habanero Ambush Case
Incident 01 – Initial Occurrence of Attack: Appearance of multiple unidentified monsters.
Location: Zone 4 Airport, Hiaka
……
After sending Cain to the imperial professors, I hurried to get everything done. I had many urgent tasks because the photoshoot for The Assassin Times was already scheduled for tomorrow.
The airport was located in Zone 4, the Hub District. Although it was a bit far from the academy, almost all logistics, supplies, and people passed through here to connect the academy to the outside world.
That’s why the Hub District had a large gate, where they checked people’s identities and their travel purposes.
Originally, checking travelers at the airport itself was enough. But due to the recent Kreutz incident, identification control had become much tighter. That was how I ended up waiting in line in front of the gate.
As I stood there, staring forward and waiting my turn, a voice suddenly cried out.
“What the hell?! Hey, asshole!! What did I do wrong? Why can’t I go?”
A man shouted angrily. There appeared to be an issue during the identification process. A few employees approached and tried to calm him down, but that only fueled his rage.
“Let me go! Let go of me! What did I do wrong, you bastards?!”
He flailed violently and struck a female employee, knocking her to the ground.
“Stop it and comply obediently!”
“Who the hell are you? Where’s the person in charge?! Bring me your manager!”
The situation was already spiraling out of control. Then the staff pulled out their taser guns. In response, the man activated his ability and started growing larger—he was using 『Gigantification』.
BOOM!!
He then kicked a nearby kiosk, breaking it and sending metal and glass shards flying. Still not satisfied with his behavior, he rushed toward the employees. The nearby civilian witnesses screamed in fear and fled the scene in chaos.
“I’ll kill you all!!”
That was when I stepped forward. Subduing him wouldn’t be difficult. All I had to do was draw the 「Sword of the Colossus○」.
It was a weapon with an activation chant, but the actual activation process just involved the colossal hand unsheathing the giant sword. Even without chanting, I could still control the invisible hand just by holding the weapon.
“Argh!! Wh-What’s going on?!”
With the invisible hand, I grabbed the giant man—now about four meters tall—and slammed him headfirst into the ground.
To the bystanders, it simply looked like he’d fallen on his own.
Overall, it was a minor incident.
But something felt off.
The Disciplinary Enforcers hadn’t shown up, and airport security had dealt with the situation alone.
“Why didn’t the Disciplinary Enforcers come?” I asked a staff member.
“Pardon? Ah… Well, I’m sure they’re busy with other matters, haha…”
The staff gave me an awkward smile.
I nodded and returned to my place in line when a cadet bounded up to me, her whole body radiating joy.
“Professor!”
It was Elize.
She had a friend with her—a fellow cadet who seemed quite close. She wore her hair in pigtails and gave off a puppy-like energy. I’d seen her a few times before and recalled she was from the White Path.
I believe she’s called Myu-Myu?
“Hello,” I greeted them.
The two girls nodded and smiled. They said they were on their way home after spending the day playing around in Zone 4.
They kept me company for the rest of the time I stood in line, chatting about their day. I nodded along occasionally.
Then Elize suddenly asked,
“Did something happen to you today, Professor?”
“Right, right,” Myu-Myu chimed in.
“…What makes you think so?” I asked.
“Hmm. Your expression looks awful. It’s been like that since earlier,” Elize said.
“You look very angry,” Myu-Myu added.
I insisted that this was just how I always looked, but the two disagreed with me. They insisted that my expression was different today—that it looked more like Elize when she had her bone taken away.
Hmm… Is that true?
I hadn’t realized there was any change myself. I turned toward a metal wall to check my reflection, but the surface was too dull to see my face clearly.
“I’m fine,” I told them.
“Would you like us to stay with you?” Elize offered.
These affectionate, people-loving dogs couldn’t help but worry. Still, I told them it was fine and gently sent them on their way.
⋮
I passed through the gate.
The airport was quieter than expected. I’d thought it would be packed with tourists visiting the Cain Tree—but then I remembered that the royal court had recently opened a new airport in Zone 9 for easier access.
Most people using Zone 4’s airport were locals living at the academy.
“We’re off on our trip!”
“Yay!”
There were families, couples, and friends looking excited, just like Elize and Myu-Myu were earlier.
But I stood there alone amid a place full of laughter and chatter.
The reason why I came here was the forged time shown to me by the Spying Star│ㅅㅇ).
I remembered exactly what the incident report said in that forged timeline. According to the investigations, there were two crises currently threatening Gray. The first was here, at this airport. As stated in the incident report, early on departure day, some monsters appeared out of nowhere, delaying the airship’s departure.
The incident was handled by Chief Professor Wilhelm and the Disciplinary Enforcers, along with Gray, but it caused another problem: Wilhelm’s mana was drained.
As I’d explained before, assassins were like missiles: they released all their destructive power in an instant, leaving them weakened afterward.
But Wilhelm had to accompany Gray due to political entanglements with the Empire. So, despite being drained, he still boarded the airship. When the real ambush happened in the Empire, he couldn’t cast proper defensive spells.
I need to nip the incidents in the bud.
A monster outbreak meant there was a fissure in the barrier protecting the academy.
So here I was, using my minimap to search for it.
The map only displayed the X and Z axes—no height—making it harder to pinpoint.
If the fissure had suddenly opened at the airport without anyone noticing earlier, it probably was hidden underground or high above.
Or so I thought, until…
Uh, I found it.
It was much closer than expected. A large crack marred a wall in plain sight.
As a couple walked by, the wife pointed and said, “Look at that, honey. There’s a crack in the wall here.”
“Oh, you’re right. The paint must be peeling off,” the husband replied.
To the average eye, it looked like just a regular crack. In truth, I might have overlooked it myself if not for my minimap.
However, something like this should have been detected if inspections had been conducted properly with the right equipment. The fact that it hadn’t been found was strange.
I kept checking the rest of the airport and found several more fissures. Most were well hidden, but at least three were in plain sight.
“…”
A surge of irritation rose in my chest.
It was the kind of frustration you’d feel when a dangerous wild animal roamed the city, yet no authorities were being dispatched to deal with it.
The worst part was that there weren’t just a few fissures. There were many, way more than I expected.
What were the Disciplinary Enforcers doing?
When did these fissures form?
As I pondered the question, my only guess was during the recent assassination war, when a mage from Kreutz cast 『Meteor』 to destroy the 「Peaceful Star☮」’s barrier.
“Gaa?”
Just then, a baby in fine clothes clumsily toddled up to me and stared. He could barely stand upright, his tiny shoes squeaking with every step.
He waddled toward the fissure I was inspecting, teetered on the edge, and nearly fell straight into it.
“Huh? Oh no!”
“Taylor!”
The parents cried out, rushing toward the boy.
But before they could reach him…
『World Forgery: Form Forgery [Vine]』
Vines erupted from the ground, wrapping gently around the baby to keep him safe.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Mage. Oh, Taylor…”
As I sent the family off safely, I realized I was more shaken than the parents.
After all, some fissures are extremely sensitive—just a light touch could rupture them completely.
But when I checked, this one wasn’t that unstable.
Still, that didn’t make the situation any less alarming.
Why had these fissures gone unattended for a whole month, especially in such a high-traffic area?
I headed straight to the airport’s nearby Disciplinary Office. I intended to question them about their recent activities and report the locations of all the fissures.
There were far too many for me to handle alone.
When I arrived, an officer with a buzz cut was sitting casually at the reception desk.
He glanced up at me lazily. The place was practically deserted. It was only 7 p.m., yet it seemed everyone else had already gone home.
“…What’s the matter?”
He didn’t recognize my Senior Professor badge—not surprising, since it was exclusive to the Assassin Department. People outside of Zone 0 were rarely aware of it.
“I’m here to ask a few questions.”
“If it’s an incident report, please submit it on the right,” the officer said, gesturing.
“It’s not an incident report. But I found several fissures.”
“Ah, we don’t handle non-incident cases.”
He waved me off dismissively, and that was when I truly realized something was deeply wrong.
“Officer. I’m talking about fissures,” I repeated.
“As if there’d be fissures inside the academy. Just report it tomorrow instead. The emergency team doesn’t handle anything at this time unless it’s a major incident.”
“It’ll be too late by tomorrow. This needs to be handled now.”
“Sure, sure. Whatever you say.”
He waved me off lazily again.
It was freaking ridiculous, but his actions seemed so natural and familiar, as if this was just how things always were in this office.
I hesitated for a moment, uncertain how to continue. Then I pressed on.
“…Officer. When was the last morning patrol?”
He stayed indifferent at first, but then his expression sharpened.
“Why are you asking that?”
“Do you even go on patrols these days?”
“Why? Was there an incident?”
“Not yet. But as I said, there are fissures. The Disciplinary Enforcers are supposed to handle issues like this and put the civilians at ease.”
“Our duty is during the daytime. You can go now.”
It was like talking to a brick wall.
I tried a little harder to win him over, but the officer stayed stubborn.
In fact, he grew increasingly annoyed.
“How many times do I have to say it? It’s not going to happen.”
“Jeez… Please, just leave already.”
I fell silent.
The sheer irresponsibility of it was almost impressive.
I glanced around the office. Posters on the walls boasted that they had the lowest crime rate in all ten zones.
Of course they did. Zone 4 had a tiny population—everyone here was just passing through to catch a flight. Who would bother committing a crime in a place like this?
“Are you not going to leave, sir?”
As I stood in silence, the officer turned and shouted toward the back.
“Kirion!”
“What?”
“Come over here for a bit! There’s this stubborn dude refusing to leave!”
Suddenly, I remembered the airport security guards—the ones sweating in their uniforms as they dragged the unconscious, giant man away.
Then, the Disciplinary Enforcers from Zone 2 came to mind—the brave warriors who endured Balmung’s complaints and kept fighting the invading ghouls despite their injuries.
And finally, I recalled Gray’s expression from the forged timeline the 「Spying Star│ㅅㅇ)」 had shown me: her face covered in burns, eyebrows furrowed in pain, her voice trembling, her small back shivering as she sat turned away from me.
I expected there to be a reasonable cause for her to get that injured—something that made sense. Perhaps a smart enemy with a grand master plan, or a traitor among us.
But it seemed I was mistaken...
It was simply due to the officers' incompetence. Because of their inaction, Wilhelm used up all his mana at the airport during the fight, and Gray was seriously hurt afterward. It was no different from slipping on a banana peel and breaking your neck—a ridiculous, pointless tragedy.
“Alright, mister. We’re all hardworking officers here, okay? Please, let's not make this more tiring than it already is.”
“We’re busy enough these days due to the changes in Zone 9, so let’s not bother the tired officers, okay? Please come back during the daytime. Got it?”
By now, three officers had gathered around me.
They began pressing forward, trying to push me toward the exit.
At that moment, an impulsive question slipped from my lips.
“Where’s the officer in charge here?”
My voice was sharp and cold, with no sign of formality or respect. Perhaps the question popped up in my mind because I remembered the stubborn, gigantic man from earlier today asking for the same thing.
All three officers went silent.
They exchanged glances, brows furrowed.
“…What are you trying to pull?”
“Who the hell do you think you are, talking to us like that?”
I glanced once more at the minimap, then spoke.
“I asked where the officer in charge is. Why can’t I see the person who should be overseeing all operations? Shouldn’t they still be on duty?”
“Hah!” One of them snorted.
“Again, who do you think you are?”
They stepped closer, trying to intimidate me.
“Who are you to demand the officer in charge? It’s none of your business where he is. Got it?”
“This is my business. You guys are doing a shit job on duty," I snapped back.
The three officers stared me down when one of them addressed the others.
“Hey. Arrest this bastard.”
“Ah, happy to oblige.”
They reached for their handcuffs.
That was when I realized we couldn’t resolve this with a peaceful discussion. Or perhaps we had long passed that point.
Because before I knew it, I’d already drawn the 「Sword of the Colossus○」 from my inventory.
“Whoa?!”
“A sword? Are you crazy…?! Drop your weapon!!”
“If you unsheathe it, you’re a dead man! Got it?!”
They freaked out and jumped back when they saw a single weapon. That was because all weapons in this game were at least as dangerous as guns in the real world. They had no way of knowing what kind of weapon I was holding.
“I said, drop your weapon, you bastard!!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle.
Their panicked reactions sharply contrasted with their earlier calm when I mentioned fissures, even though monsters were far more dangerous than any sword.
“What are you laughing at?! Drop the weapon!!”
“Hey, you crazy fucker! You think law enforcement is a joke?! You wanna end up with a hole in your skull?!”
What he said was true. No matter how bold a criminal was, no one messed with the Disciplinary Enforcers.
If someone took out a field agent, a high-ranking officer would arrive. Take out the high-ranking officer, and an executive would show up. The enforcers would keep coming—an endless chain of escalation whenever one of their own was hurt. Against such a system, there was nothing a single person could do.
But I was different.
“You better listen to me while I’m still being nice. Bring me the officer in charge. Now.”
I growled at them, but they didn’t comply.
“Shut your damn mouth and drop the sword, you son of a bitch! If you don’t let go by the count of three, you're dead!”
Chk, clack—!
Three gun barrels were hastily drawn and aimed at me.
Whiiiiir—!
Mana surged into the chambers, heating the magic bullets as they prepared to kill.
But I didn’t move.
The moment I saw those neglected fissures, I had a gut feeling things would come to this.
“One!”
My gaze turned toward the reception desk. I wondered briefly why there was a reception if they didn’t accept reports.
Then, I noticed another crack inside the office. Since it was fairly far from the reception, I could aim for the desk here without much concern.
“Two!!”
Still gripping the sword, I moved a single finger of the giant, invisible colossus high above.
From high in the sky, something started to fall—quickly—directly toward the reception desk.
“Thr—”
Just as the officers’ fingers twitched on their triggers, the colossus struck. It was only a mere finger, but the force behind it was anything but weak.
BOOOOOOOM———!!
The building exploded.
Something unseen pierced through the roof and obliterated the reception desk. It didn’t stop there—it punched through the floor, shattered the ground beneath, and even cracked the building’s foundation.
A violent shockwave erupted and tore through the area.
That single blow turned the office into chaos. Every window shattered, tools and items on every table flew into the air, and everyone inside was knocked to the ground.
Thick dust filled the air but quickly settled. Once the shockwave passed, the three officers slowly raised their heads. None of them said a word.
Finally, they’re ready to talk.
