Chapter 29: DLC [Professor in a Heroic Fantasy] – Midpoint Recap (2)
——
Scene #1 – The Professors
Scene #2 – Kaiser
Scene #3 – Eve ◀
Scene #4 – Dante Hiakapo
Potential—a game mechanic that carried multiple effects.
Those with high potential grew faster than others.
They could also grow further than others.
[1.0] represented the potential of an average person.
[1.5] marked someone brilliant.
[1.8] belonged to those others looked up to.
[2.0] appeared once a year, if at all, in a single exceptional student.
[2.1] denoted the best among their peers and generation.
[2.3] marked an absolute prodigy, a top-tier value even among the strongest professors.
And finally, [2.5] was legendary—granted to perhaps thirty people across the entire continent.
This classification system didn’t seem too different in Hell Mode.
Most professors here had a potential between [1.9] and [2.2].
If I had to guess, Hakon was probably around [2.1].
However, in this Hell Mode world, the potential of certain individuals has been adjusted upward, specifically those tied to the main story and likely to cause my death.
Take Balmung from the Black Dragon Division as an example:
Balmung Nibelung [2.8]
Or perhaps the neutral chief professor who would eventually betray Hiaka:
Battalion Argius [2.5]
The overall potential of the key characters in this game had definitely increased.
But again, it made sense—these two were tied to the main narrative.
So then… What was the deal with this kid?
Eve Lemontree [3.0]
In the bugged space atop Mount Stargaze, I came to hang out with Eve for the 19th time.
She was always nowhere to be seen during the day, but once night fell, she’d appear and sit atop a large burial mound, gazing at the sky.
As I approached, Eve raised both her hands and waved them side to side.
She’d started doing that ever since our last encounter.
Her movements were awkward, especially since people usually wave with just one hand.
Eve’s stiff gesture, with her palms and fingers barely extended, looked unnatural.
Was she not accustomed to this gesture? Had she grown up far away from civilization, raised in the wild by animals, like those fictional tales from the real world?
I had looked into the “Lemontree” surname. It belonged to a local baron’s family.
That meant she couldn’t have been a construct of the bugged space. She must have existed even before this place was formed.
I made a mental note to investigate more later.
My goal was simple: somehow turn Eve into a convenient tool I could use—an asset.
With a monstrous [3.0] potential, she could prove invaluable.
In other words, I approached her with ulterior motives.
Just like professors from the Assassin Department, who’d cozy up to talented cadets to exploit their value.
I was no different.
So far, I had tried using all sorts of items to curry Eve’s favor—a scope, a bell, a puppy, perfume, pastries, and more.
Some showed promising results. The bell, in particular, worked wonders.
In fact, that’s what she had on her mind now.
I could tell just from the look on her face.
As soon as she noticed me, she pulled out a pine cone from somewhere and shook it side to side.
“Nope.”
She tilted her head in confusion and shook the pine cone again.
“I suddenly don’t want to give it to you anymore.”
Still puzzled, she tilted her head once more and shook it harder.
“I don’t care how fast you shake it. I’m not giving you a bell today,” I said, enjoying my moment of pettiness.
“Can I sit next to you?”
Eve stared at me for a long moment, then slowly turned her body, clearly indifferent.
This was a major step forward.
For the first time ever, I sat beside her on the burial mound.
Together, we gazed up at the open sky stretching above us in darkness.
For some reason, she was always watching this view.
Personally, I didn’t see the appeal. The night sky was just the night sky.
But the way she looked at it, so wistfully, made me wonder.
Maybe it was the stars.
Could Eve be watching the gods of this world?
“I’ll get going now. See you again,” I said, rising to my feet.
Eve shook the pine cone again.
“Still not giving it to you.”
She shook it even harder.
“Even if you shake it really fast, I’m still not handing it over. Later.”
At those words, Eve stopped tilting her head.
She froze briefly, then reached under her raggedy hood and rummaged around her waist.
A moment later, she pulled something out.
A knife.
“Whoa, whoa. No need to go that far,” I said quickly, raising both hands. “What kind of bell should I give you? A big one? Or maybe an even bigger—”
I quickly backpedaled and relented to her request.
She tilted her head, then calmly put the knife down.
This time, she pulled out something else—a bright red item.
It was an apple.
Eve held it out with careful hands, glancing between the fruit and my face.
“What’s this? Why an apple?”
Obviously, she didn’t answer.
She still didn’t understand words, but it looked like she wanted to give me something.
So I accepted it.
“Thanks.”
No response. As usual.
Still, this was a first.
Now that I've thought about it, I realize I was always the one giving her things.
This was the first time Eve had ever handed me something of her own will.
And... it felt surprisingly nice.
On the way back, I took a nice big bite.
Crunch—!
The apple was perfectly ripe. Delicious.
Scene #3 – Eve
Scene #4 – Dante Hiakapo ◀
On the way home, I focused on practicing my Illusion Arts inside the car.
< Proficiency: 88.32% >
Life had been relatively peaceful lately. I had survived and grown stronger. I was networking with both the Black and White Paths. My relationship with Eve had progressed quite a bit, and my proficiency in 『World Forgery』 was approaching 90%.
Although a large portion of my success was due to sheer luck, my efforts were finally being rewarded.
But despite all that, I was becoming more anxious with each passing day.
There were simply too many potential threats lurking in this world, and they kept gnawing at my mind.
There was the main story, which could escalate at any moment and trigger a game over with a single misstep.
There were assassination attempts from the cadets that could come at any time without warning.
There was the Black Dragon Division, growing more dangerous by the day.
And most of all…
● Hornless Demon, Toxin
There was that bastard.
As soon as I stepped out of the car in front of the professors' residence building, I noticed a pair of eyes watching me from the tall clock tower.
It was the demon—an enemy of humanity.
Killing demons would reward me with plenty of Star Shards, so I was biding my time, waiting for the right moment to step up and deal with Toxin. If no such moment ever came, I was fully prepared to take the initiative and kill him before he harmed anyone.
Perhaps I was truly becoming a professor in the Assassin Department.
As I stared back at Toxin, the only thing running through my mind was the many ways I would kill that demon.
“…Professor? Aren’t you coming in?”
“I am.”
When the time came, I would quietly end his life, far away from the prying eyes...
Scene #Cookie – Cat of the Black Dragon Division ◀
Senior Professor Collider of Illusion Arts Studies was teaching his class.
“The most important thing in Illusion Arts is optimization. The number of illusions and their range that a single human can operate simultaneously are limited, and...”
But then, someone in the room muttered, “That’s not even true…”
Professor Collider shut his eyes tightly and pretended not to hear.
“There are several types of optimization, but today we’ll focus on modeling optimization.”
『 Dream’s Embrace 』
The professor touched a cactus and activated his ability.
Crackle!
Sparks of mana flickered around him as a mirage of the cactus appeared. It swirled through the air like dust and eventually solidified into a seemingly physical cactus—an exact replica of the one already on his desk.
But then, that same voice muttered again.
“That’s lame…”
Professor Collider clenched his fist under the podium, clearly irritated.
“…This may look like a three-dimensional plant to you, but in reality, most of it is flat.”
To demonstrate and prove his point, Collider slowly spun the cactus.
Sure enough, it was like two pieces of paper standing upright, intersecting at a perfect right angle to form an X. The two flat, illusion-like planes overlapped and aligned perfectly, tricking the eye into perceiving it as a three-dimensional object.
Professor Collider relished the astonished looks on the cadets’ faces.
“Using this method, you can create illusions that still deceive the human eye, even when the shape isn’t truly three-dimensional—”
“Who would be deceived by that…?” Another mutter echoed in the room.
Collider finally snapped.
“Quiet, Gray!!”
A hush fell over the classroom.
All eyes turned to the cadet with a cheeky little fang poking through her lips.
“…Sorry~♡”
The gray-haired girl grinned mischievously. Her shrunken uniform clung tightly to her frame, and tattoos covered her body. Everything about her screamed stray cat.
It was Gray Habanero from the Black Dragon Division.
“What is wrong with you?! Why are you provoking your professor during class?! Do you have a problem?!”
“Oh, sorry, sorry~ I didn’t know you could hear me~”
“As if I’d believe that! Do you think I’m some kind of joke?!”
“No way~ But still, that cactus was really lame♡”
“What did you just say?!”
“No matter how much you optimize it, it was way too flat. Anyone with a semi-decent depth perception would’ve figured it out instantly~♡”
The room fell silent again. Professor Collider shut his eyes in frustration.
He was boiling with rage, but his opponent wasn’t someone he could look down upon.
She was from the Black Dragon Division.
Not only was she the daughter of a prestigious house of assassins, but she also belonged to a group of geniuses who had already assassinated several professors.
And on top of that, Gray was notorious for disrupting every class she attended.
“Get out of my class!”
“Oh? Out of the class?”
“Out!”
“For real?”
“Yes, really! Now, get out!”
“Okay~ But since I came, you’ll still mark my attendance, right?”
“I don’t give a damn about that. Just leave! Now!”
Gray gave a cheeky grin and calmly strolled to the door, her footsteps light and graceful like a cat’s.
As she passed the professor’s desk, she gently brushed her hand across the cactus, knocking it off.
Crash!
The pot shattered against the floor.
“Hey! What the hell do you think you’re—?!”
Professor Collider’s furious yelling halted mid-sentence.
The cactus was still sitting on his desk, perfectly intact.
The one she had knocked off had been an illusion.
In just that brief moment, Gray had created and deployed an illusion more detailed and seamless than his. She had fooled him—at point-blank range—without him even realizing she had activated her ability.
Gray walked through the door and disappeared down the hallway, just as instructed.
“…How can there be such a rude and arrogant little—!”
Professor Collider’s frustrated scream echoed through the halls.
Hmm.
Elize, who had been in the same class, quietly vanished into thin air and sneaked her way out of the classroom, following her fellow Black Dragon cadet.
She found Gray sitting on the building's rooftop, staring out into the distance. Elize approached.
“Gray.”
“Hmm?”
“Why did you do that?”
“Do what? That thing just now?”
“Yeah.”
“I just couldn’t stand it. If the school’s gonna make me take classes, they should teach something worth learning. But that professor was just way too terrible at illusions.”
“Really? I thought he was fine.”
“Fine? Please. Elites like him are the problem. They’re stuck in their outdated ways. He was absolute trash.”
“Really?”
“There are very few Illusion Art assassins in the world. We should take pride in our craft. If you're going to teach others, you need conviction. You need to believe that your illusions are worth learning.”
“Sounds tough…”
Elize nodded thoughtfully as Gray continued ranting.
The House of Habanero was famous for its Illusion Arts.
Gray had been raised with that legacy and carried a sharp sense of pride in her illusory craft.
“Speaking of, why do you even bother taking classes in Stealth Studies? There’s not a single professor better than you at hiding.”
“Hmm. Yeah, I wonder why…”
“What’s with that answer? Are you stupid?”
“...That tracks. You really are stupid…”
Gray clicked her tongue with feigned exasperation, that cheeky fang still showing.
“Whatever… You’re just a girl who plays around with lives like a damn puppy with a ball. What would you know about our pride in Illusion Arts? I’m leaving. Gonna nap.”
With that, Gray leapt off the rooftop and wandered off.
Left alone, Elize quietly mulled things over.
Speaking of which, isn’t Dante’s class, “Understanding Assassination and Abilities,” next week going to cover the topic of Illusion Arts?
Hmm?
If she had a tail, it would be wagging right now.
Professor Dante was special… What kind of illusions would he teach in his class?
I’m curious.
Her intrigue had been piqued.
