Chapter 93: Club Volunteer Activities

After arriving at the back kitchen, I briefly explained the situation to Senior Tang Yihan.

After all, these were just ordinary matters, and the other party was merely my roommate.

So, Senior Tang Yihan quickly shifted the topic.

"Little Han, you've been at Witch Academy for quite a while now, right? Even though classes haven't started and there's no academic atmosphere, aside from studying, this is the most typical state of being at the academy."

"Indeed, it feels a bit too relaxed," I nodded in agreement.

These past few days, I was either helping at the shop or practicing flying in the afternoon.

It really felt like a monotonous routine of home, work, and practice.

"So, do you like this kind of life?"

"Uh… I wouldn't say I love it, but I don't hate it either."

I wasn't sure what Senior was getting at.

I actually quite enjoyed this laid-back lifestyle, but over time, it did get boring.

It was far from the extraordinary world I had imagined.

"You actually like it a little?"

Tang Yihan smiled at my response.

"Everyone who enters Witch Academy is considered a preparatory witch. Witches are the least idle group. Want to try something different? You're part of the Bakery Club, but doing cashier work and baking isn't the entirety of our club. Have you heard of club activities?"

"Club activities? Yeah, I've heard of them."

Hearing Senior mention this, I perked up.

Every club had its own unique activities, some dull, some exciting.

For example, the Flying License Training Club's activities involved recruiting students to teach flying techniques, occasionally holding flying competitions or events.

I heard that meaningful or fun activities reported to the academy could even receive funding support.

Could our tiny club, with only a handful of members, also have some exciting activities?

"So, Senior, does our club have any interesting activities?"

I put down the tool in my hand, asking eagerly.

"I can't guarantee they'll be interesting, since it's all organized by the shop manager. When she's free, she likes to stir up some club activities. Back when we had fewer people, we didn't pay much attention to her. Now that it's the new semester and club recruitment time, she's got ideas again."

"Ugh… that sounds kind of boring," I said, my initial curiosity instantly deflated.

If even Senior ignored these activities, how could I possibly enjoy them?

Speaking of recruitment, if I remembered correctly, we only recruited two new members, right?

Tan Han probably didn't have time to indulge in the shop manager's antics.

So if this activity went ahead, wouldn't it just be me carrying the whole thing?

At most, Senior might lend a hand if she saw me struggling.

"It is pretty boring, but we have no choice but to hold it. Still, the shop manager is quite generous and offered some nice rewards. There’s a Magic Power Source and spellbooks," Tang Yihan said calmly, noticing my lack of enthusiasm.

"Ahem I think these activities sound pretty interesting after all," I quickly corrected myself.

Rewards?

Why didn’t she mention that sooner.

Those represented mana capacity and spell skills, which could give me a huge edge over other freshmen before classes even started.

"Uh, Senior, I think I’m pretty suited for this activity. Could you tell me more about it? What exactly do we need to do? As long as it’s not too outrageous, I’m up for anything!"

"Newcomer guidance," Tang Yihan said succinctly.

"Huh? What?"

"Newcomer guidance. Before the official start of the semester, due to many students improperly recruiting newcomers, a significant portion of freshmen entering the academy haven’t completed all the procedures. Some don’t even have their room cards and end up sleeping on the streets…"

"Wait a second! Doesn’t the academy do anything about this?"

I interrupted Senior.

Not only was recruiting being called ‘special recruitment,’ but was this kind of chaos actually the norm?

"Isn’t this them doing something about it? But it still needs someone to actually carry it out."

"This… isn’t this just cleaning up after those irresponsible seniors?"

I retorted.

I had done something like this myself, like with poor Quan Xiuzhu.

Without me, I bet she would’ve been sleeping on the streets that night.

"But there are rewards."

"Uh… I…"

For a moment, I was speechless.

The rewards were indeed tempting; both the Magic Power Source and spellbooks were hard to resist.

"So… are you and the others going, Senior?"

"I don’t want to," Tang Yihan said firmly, making her stance clear.

"Ying Shiqian probably feels the same."

"What about Tan Han?"

I asked tentatively.

"Her? The academy gave this top scholar some generous benefits, including Magic Power Sources and spellbooks. She probably doesn’t care about these," Tang Yihan sighed heavily.

"Ugh…"

At that moment, I truly felt the gap between people.

But I quickly posed a critical question.

"So, I’m the only one from the club who might go? Why is the shop manager even holding this event?"

"This is a mandatory activity for every club when new students arrive. It’s a club obligation. If our club doesn’t fulfill it, the shop manager will be under even more pressure. But don’t worry if you feel wronged, just do the bare minimum to meet the assigned quota. Our club is small, so the quota isn’t high. If it comes to it, I’ll make the shop manager compensate you. I’ll go cry to her on your behalf."

"No, it’s not that serious," I quickly said, tugging at Senior.

Going to cry to the shop manager?

That was a bit much.

"Then I’ll leave this to you. You’re our club’s last hope!"

Tang Yihan then solemnly grabbed my hand, looking at me earnestly without giving me a chance to back out.

So, I was reluctantly roped into this task.

She also said my part-time wages during this period would be calculated as full-time.

After all, no matter what I did, I was contributing to the Bakery Club.

How could they not pay me?

I could start this task tomorrow, or even today if possible.

The activity would continue until the official start of the semester.

After that, everything would follow proper procedures instead of the current mess.

To me, this was just asking for trouble.

If they just revised the specific requirements for recruiting new students in the Academy System to include completing all procedures, most of these issues would be resolved.

But clearly, I was overthinking it.

The seniors doing the recruiting probably didn’t care about those task rewards.

Some did it out of personal grudges with other academies, while others just enjoyed recruiting junior brothers or sisters.

If the rewards for these ‘special recruitment’ tasks were too high, the recruitment frenzy at Witch Academy might become even more intense, and the Three Great Top-tier Academies wouldn’t just sit idly by, they'd definitely react.

So, the number of ‘specially recruited’ students was indeed small, even fewer than I had imagined.

When I first arrived, it was probably during the wave of admission notices, with many freshmen voluntarily coming early, so it seemed like there were more people.

Now, the number of newcomers had dwindled.

The most obvious sign was when I went with Dongli Yiren to pick up her bedding set we barely saw any other freshmen.

The senior in charge of registering and distributing uniforms was extremely idle.
