Chapter 27 : Speculations About the Magic Power Source
“Yes, your mental strength isn’t enough to manipulate magic power right now, let alone transfer a magic power source. Besides, you only have one magic power source,” the senior sister said.
“Then how can I manipulate magic power?”
I pressed further.
Since she said my mental strength wasn’t sufficient, mental strength must be the key.
Did that mean I needed to meditate harder?
“No rush. When classes officially start, your teacher will cover this in the first lesson. Learning to manipulate magic power is the most basic skill for a preparatory witch,” she replied, dodging a direct answer and passing the responsibility to my yet-to-be-met teacher.
“Well… can I get a preview of what the teacher will teach?” I asked, still eager to know more.
“Of course, it’s meditation techniques. What’s more effective for boosting mental strength than meditation?”
She answered my persistence as if it were obvious, but then seemed to recall something and continued explaining.
“Oh, I remember now. The meditation I’m talking about isn’t the theoretical kind you’re thinking of. In your first class, your teacher will teach you a meditation technique exclusive to witches. Your intangible mental strength will form into tangible mental threads. Only then will your mental strength be capable of interacting with magic power.”
I nodded, half-understanding.
So, after school starts, I’d learn this new meditation technique.
I was pretty confident in theoretical meditation, so this new technique shouldn’t be too hard, right?
“Thank you, senior sister, for telling me all this…”
“No problem. Any more questions?”
Her tone shifted slightly, as if my barrage of questions was starting to wear on her.
If I kept asking, I had a feeling I’d annoy her.
After all, it was early morning, and she wasn’t here just to answer freshmen’s questions—she was handling registration.
“Nope, thank you again, senior sister!”
I wisely stopped asking, thanked her, and quickly left.
I didn’t go far, though.
I found a corner to sit in.
That conversation had given me a lot of useful information, like the academy system on my phone, which had tons of functions I’d need to explore slowly.
Another key point was how to use magic power, which tied to this new meditation technique.
And if I hadn’t misheard, it sounded like magic power sources could be transferred?
So, the first magic power source in a freshman’s body was given to them by a senior sister.
I’d observed the so-called magic power source in my body with Spirit Vision, so I knew it contained a large amount of magic power—seemingly the kind that could slowly regenerate.
If magic power sources could be transferred…
Then someone with a lot of resources could amass a ton of magic power sources.
In my current understanding, magic power sources equaled magic power, and magic power was supernatural strength.
In the supernatural world, wasn’t it all about who had the most power?
From that perspective, a magic power source was like a mana bar.
The more mana you had, the more spells you could cast, and the stronger you were.
I wondered how the supernatural world measured strength.
Was it as simple as tying it to the number of magic power sources?
It probably wasn’t that crude, right?
I pushed these baseless speculations out of my mind.
Daydreaming wouldn’t do me any good.
These basics would likely be covered by the teachers later.
For now, I need to worry about my financial situation.
If I couldn’t find a decent way to make money, I’d probably lose my appetite for lunch.
Even a simple part-time job would do.
Ideally, something flexible, where I could come and go as I pleased and get paid by the hour.
After all, my main goal at Witch Academy was to learn about the supernatural world, not to scrape by with part-time jobs.
I couldn’t lose sight of my priorities.
Of course, making money is also important right now.
I wondered if the academy had any financial aid for poor students.
Didn’t they say there were subsidies for boys who enrolled?
Oh well, I’d figure it out later.
I opened the academy system and started looking through it carefully.
It showed class assignments and schedules, as the senior sister had mentioned, but I couldn’t see them yet—they were marked as unassigned.
That made sense.
School hadn’t started yet, and the academy probably didn’t even know how many freshmen would show up, especially with all the “recruited” students.
They wouldn’t exclude those tricked into coming from the roster or class assignments, would they?
Since there were no updates on that front, I turned to the task system to see what kinds of tasks were available.
Opening it, I saw the system was divided into several sections.
The most prominent was the “official” academy tasks.
At first, I thought the top task would be about volunteering to guide new students, but the very
first one was a bounty task to recruit someone!
It was even pinned by the academy, the only task with that distinction.
The task showed that a lot of people had accepted it, but it hadn’t been completed yet.
What kind of important person warranted this kind of treatment?
I clicked on the first task to check the details.
The target was a freshman named Tan Han.
From the limited information I had, she was the nation’s top student—the only one to score a perfect mark.
A perfect score!
Even with my shallow understanding of exam rankings, I knew perfect scores only happened once every few years.
That’s why I’d heard of this person’s name despite never meeting her.
It had been many years since the last perfect score, so no wonder Witch Academy issued this task.
No need to think—this task had nothing to do with me.
I was a freshman too; how could I recruit someone?
I’d better focus on finding a stable part-time job, ideally one close to where I lived or near the central teaching area.
After scrolling for a while, I spotted the familiar words “Xinmeng Li Street.”
Wasn’t that where my dorm was?
That’d be super close!
Clicking on it, I saw a bakery looking for apprentice clerks.
The posting had been up for a while, and not many people had applied.
Maybe they forgot to take it down?
Even so, I wanted to contact them and ask.
It wouldn’t hurt to try.
Plus, learning some baking skills wouldn’t be bad.
I could try it out in the dorm later.
I’d only glanced at the kitchen in that big villa, but letting it go to waste would be a shame.
I efficiently dialed the number, eagerly waiting for the call to connect.
“Hello? Are you applying for the job?”
As soon as the call connected, a voice came through.
From their tone, this number was likely dedicated to job applicants.
“Yes, are you still…”
“We’re still hiring. If you’re interested, come to the location listed for an interview.”
“Okay… thank you,” I said politely.
“No trouble. Bye.”
The call ended so quickly that I couldn’t help but worry if this was a legit job.
But the senior sister had said I could report scams for compensation, so that gave me some confidence.
Might as well give it a try—it’s not like I’d lose anything.
