Chapter 11: The Witch’s Standard Four-Piece Set
Although I came to collect the school uniform, it was only after arriving that I realized what exactly we were picking up.
The first thing that caught my attention was the large witch hat with its tall, pointed top.
Its wide brim, when worn, could cast a shadow on the ground that covered the entire body.
Looking at the many witch hats, they seemed to come in different sizes and even colors, stacked one on top of another.
It looked like we could choose our own.
Then, a senior sister in charge handed me a registration form and instructed me to fill it out and submit it to receive the uniform.
I looked at the form and the pen in my hand, quickly accepting the setup.
The form was divided into four sections, meaning the uniform consisted of four components?
The first section stumped me—not because I didn’t understand it, but because I was hit with choice paralysis.
The first thing I had to choose was a magic wand.
The types of wands were optional: short wand, long wand, or custom wand.
There was also a blank remarks section where I could specify detailed requests for the wand, as long as they weren’t too excessive.
“What’s wrong? Having trouble?”
Sister Bai came up behind me, sounding concerned.
“Um… a little. Sister Bai, do you have any recommendations for the wand?”
I pointed to the first section of the form and asked.
“The wand will be with you for a long time in your academy life, so you need to choose carefully.
I generally recommend the short wand because the long wand is too big—often taller than a
person.
It’s inconvenient to carry, and without storage equipment, it’s hard to store and easily gets damaged,” Bai Yu offered her advice, explaining her reasoning briefly.
I could foresee the issues she mentioned.
Something that big would indeed be a hassle.
“What about the custom wand?”
“That’s for people who dual-train in weapons. It’s called a wand, but it’s more like a cold weapon infused with wand properties through alchemy. You can customize it into a sword, spear, or other weapon. What, do you want a sword or something else?”
Sister Bai asked with a smile, then leaned in to whisper in my ear, “I know you little boys like swinging swords around. Choosing this is fine too.”
“Ahem…”
Her words did make me a bit tempted.
It would be pretty cool!
But that was just a passing thought.
I was a complete novice with cold weapons, having only taught myself a few flashy moves and sword flourishes.
If I went with that, I wouldn’t know how to handle it.
“Forget it. I’ll stick to something practical and go with the short wand you recommended.”
“Alright. By the way, you need to fill out the remarks section too. I’ll dictate, you write. If you don’t add remarks, you’ll get the most basic wand. Since they allow remarks, we might as well take advantage of it.”
“Got it! Let’s milk it!” I echoed excitedly.
Who doesn’t love getting a good deal?
“First, the wand core needs high-quality magic-conducting material (quality can be lowered, but it must be magic-conducting material). The wand body should be carved from a single piece of mithril gradient wood (if unavailable, other materials can substitute, but it must be carved as a whole without splicing or bonding issues…).”
“Slow… slow down, Sister Bai…”
I hurriedly scribbled down everything she said.
Sister Bai seemed very knowledgeable about this, rattling off details without stopping.
“Sorry, I got a bit excited. Next is the wand core. Your mental affinity is universal, so let’s go with a neutral crystal inlay. Finally, the wand body needs to be finished with coupled inlay craftsmanship using metal wire. The wire should be…”
I stopped writing only after filling the entire remarks section, even going a bit over.
I couldn’t help but glance at the note saying “requests must not be too excessive.”
Was this really not too much?
I looked at Sister Bai with some confusion.
“Um, Sister Bai, with so many demands, will the academy really follow through?”
“Making demands is your right. If you write them down, at worst, you’ll get the same as everyone else. If they approve your requests, you’ve hit the jackpot, right?”
Bai Yu said with a smile.
As an academy veteran, she was an expert at milking the system.
“That makes sense.”
I nodded firmly, agreeing with her logic.
“And the demands I listed are interconnected. If even some are accepted, your wand won’t be bad. Wand-making considers overall balance, and if the main materials vary too much in quality, it’s likely to fail. Don’t worry.”
“Okay, I’ll trust Sister Bai!”
“Good. Next, the witch hat and witch cape are pretty straightforward. There aren’t many specific requests you can make—just some basic body measurements.”
As she spoke, Bai Yu took a soft measuring tape borrowed from nearby and approached me.
“Let Sister Bai measure you”
Seeing her like this, I felt she was a bit different from before, but I wasn’t fazed.
I spread my arms and greeted her with a grin.
“Go ahead and measure”
After Sister Bai measured me, I got a rough idea of my current body stats, though they weren’t exactly ideal.
“It’s fine. The physical changes from Witchification are more drastic for boys than for girls. It’s not much now, but you never know later. If the hat or cape doesn’t fit later, you can come back to adjust the size,” Sister Bai whispered in my ear, offering some comfort.
“Mm.”
I continued looking at the form.
The wand, witch hat, and witch cape were all chosen.
The last one… was a badge, or rather, a school emblem?
It was a chest pin to wear on the front, with selectable designs.
“Sister Bai, what’s the badge for, and how do I choose?”
“The badge has a solidified spell, providing new students with an initial spell. Once you learn how to use it, you can channel magic into it to cast the spell almost instantly, though don’t expect it to be very powerful.”
“As for choosing, pick a badge design you like. For the solidified spell, since you have universal mental affinity, it doesn’t matter much which one you choose.”
“Alright then…”
As expected, for a universal-affinity nobody like me, it didn’t matter what I picked.
No real choice there.
I randomly selected a badge design and moved on to the solidified spell, which was simple.
There were fireballs, water surge, wind pressure, and earth spike.
Just four spells, all sounding like basic attacks from a game.
I went with the most basic fireball.
Among the four elements, fire seemed to have the highest attack power, so naturally, I chose the one with the most damage.
